The Next Generation Initiative

personal development for the leaders of tomorrow

The Next Generation Initiative equips students in urban middle and high schools with the tools to cultivate and practice inner governance.

We believe the leaders and founders this moment demands won't be developed through professional skills training alone, but will require personal development as well.

It Starts Within

Our Mission:

The Next Generation Initiative equips students in urban middle and high schools with the tools to cultivate inner governance, the ability to govern themselves.

This initiative offers a framework for gaining mental clarity, developing their emotional intelligence, and deepening their moral courage.

The ambition is to create a sturdy interior foundation to build on as they grow into leaders and entrepreneurs our collective future deserves.

THE GAP WE'RE CLOSING:

Three crises are converging on young people at once, and they are rarely named together: a literacy crisis, an emotional wellbeing crisis, and an accelerating employment crisis as artificial intelligence reshapes the entry-level economy young people are meant to grow into.

Build It Boldly's curriculum on leadership, inner governance, and courage already reaches executives, entrepreneurs, and university audiences. The Next Generation Initiative brings that same work to the students and community groups who need it most and can access it least: urban middle and high schools, and the community organizations in their neighborhoods.

THE ARC: FROM SELF TO LEADER

Build It Boldly's existing curriculum, rooted in The Leader's Work, is built for people who already hold leadership roles. The Next Generation Initiative uses that same framework, but reorders the arc intentionally for young people: we start with the person, not the position.

PATH 1 - Identity Construction

Anchored in The Leader's Work and adapted for youth, this path centers an approach to identity construction via first-person writing. Before we ask a young person to lead a team or launch an idea, we ask them to know who they are, what they value, and how they intend to move through the world. Reading and personal narrative are the practice tools, not add-ons. The result: young people who possess self-knowledge, self-acceptance, self-confidence and compassion.

PATH 2 - Inner Governance

Building on The Leader's Work and adapted for youth, this path works to expose students to the fundamentals of self-regulation, emotional literacy, via first-person writing and personal reflection. Here we invite young people to discover the power of stillness, the wisdom of solitude, and the gift of silence. In a noisy social world, we teach students how to steady themselves in any storm. Reading and personal narrative remain important anchors.

PATH 3 - Leadership Development

In this path, students build the practical language of leadership: decision-making, communication, and the moral courage to act on what they believe is best for the common good. The focus is on developing personal voice and bold vision.

PATH 4 - Social Entrepreneurship

Anchored in Build It Boldly's own business design-thinking curriculum, students are guided in how to identify a concept, develop an idea, and outline a social entrepreneurial venture that responds to a need in their own community.

In this path they will learn about the nature of  B Corps and how to approach business design with a mindfulness for people and planet as they pursue profit.

WHAT STUDENTS EXPERIENCE:

  • Workshops:  Live facilitation workshops adapted from Build It Boldly's design curriculum
  • Books:  Classroom sets of The Leader's Workbook and/or Build It Boldly, for reflection that continues after the session ends.
  • Practice:  First-person writing, reflection, and structured reading are built into every session as the core mechanism for identity work, not supplemental activities.

Students don't just hear Dr. McGlonn, they leave with tools that support a continued practice.

FUNDING:

The Next Generation Initiative operates with the support of our fiscal sponsor, The Sustainable Business Network, allowing us to accept tax-deductible gifts and grants on Build It Boldly's behalf so that schools receive invaluable programming at no cost at all to them.

Every dollar invested here is an investment into the next generation of leaders at a time when the development of their internal foundation matters most.
